What Cargo Does

Cargo’s goal is to spread the positive impact of specialty coffee to under-represented communities.

To achieve that, I locate high potential and underrepresented small-scale coffee producers across Brazil, and connect them with thoughtful coffee roasters in the UK to deliver unique, extraordinary and fully traceable coffees and the stories behind them.

To produce coffee cupping an SCA score of 84+ year after year requires commitment and meticulous dedication from farmers, beyond simply optimal location, terroir and climate for growing great coffee. Cargo has developed meaningful and transparent relationships with growers who demonstrate that pursuit of excellence, and help them to directly access a market that rewards it.

About Phil

I’ve been working in the specialty coffee industry for over 20 years now. In that time I think I’ve had just about every role and experience possible in the UK coffee industry; I’ve worked at small roasters who were growing rapidly and are now major nationwide players, I’ve run my own roastery and was co-director at another, and I’ve run the coffee programme for a major cultural institution in London.

Now with Cargo I put all of that experience and all of those connections to work to help improve the coffee industry. I understand all of the challenges that growing roasteries face, and the challenges that small-scale specialty coffee producers in Brazil deal with, and how they can be overcome through direct relationships.
